Air freight operators often ask for a hangar quote only after the apron layout has already been frozen. That order can create avoidable pressure on the building package, because the steel frame, door pocket, drainage line, and fire access lane all compete for the same narrow strip of land. A better procurement note begins with the aircraft service routine. Which side receives fuel trucks, where does ground power wait, how high must a tail pass under the door beam, and can maintenance staff move a small scissor lift without crossing the marked tug route? These questions sound operational, yet they affect the bay spacing, clear height, cladding specification, and foundation reactions of the hangar.
For a small or medium freight apron, the first drawing to review is not the architect's elevation. It is a simple movement diagram. Mark the turning circle of service vehicles, the parking envelope of the aircraft, the door opening, the safe walking route, and the quarantine area for tools or spare parts. Once those zones are visible, the buyer can decide whether a single clear span is worth the premium or whether a line of internal columns is acceptable behind the working aircraft envelope. Clear span framing improves flexibility, but it also changes steel weight, column base reactions, and erection sequencing.
Wind exposure deserves a separate paragraph in any hangar brief. A broad door opening can turn a normal portal frame into a difficult uplift and bracing problem when storms arrive from the apron side. Ask suppliers to state the wind code, terrain category, design speed, internal pressure assumption, and the door-open condition used for the frame. If two offers use different assumptions, their tonnage and price will not be comparable. The buyer should not reward the lighter quote until those design inputs are aligned.
Door selection is another place where a cheap quote can become expensive later. Sliding doors, fabric lifting doors, and sectional combinations each need different guide rails, maintenance space, and wind locks. The steel frame must include the correct support points before fabrication. If the door vendor is appointed separately, insist on an interface sheet showing loads from the door system, rail elevations, motor brackets, and emergency release requirements. That sheet should be approved before shop drawings are released.
Floor loading is often underestimated because the aircraft is the obvious load. In practice, forklifts, parts racks, compressor skids, and temporary jacks create concentrated pressures that influence the slab and anchor layout. The building supplier may not design the slab, but the column grid, anchor bolt plan, and apron threshold details should be coordinated with the civil engineer. A mismatch at the door sill can cause water ponding, wheel impact, or a step that slows maintenance work every day.
When evaluating an industrial steel building manufacturer, ask for a hangar-specific document set rather than a generic warehouse brochure. Useful evidence includes previous large-door projects, sample erection drawings, bracing details around door frames, packing lists for long rafters, and a quality plan for welded connections. The supplier should also explain how they protect painted members during ocean freight and how site crews identify similar-looking secondary members during installation.
Coating and corrosion protection should follow the apron environment. Coastal airports, desert dust, deicing chemicals, or industrial fumes all change the finish recommendation. A darker finish may hide dirt, but it can increase thermal movement. Galvanized secondary members may be justified in humid zones, while a controlled paint system may be enough inland. Buyers should ask for a practical maintenance note: expected inspection interval, touch-up method, and storage instructions if the steel arrives before foundations are ready.
The shipping plan is not a minor commercial attachment. Hangar rafters, door columns, and bracing rods can be long, heavy, or easy to lose if bundles are not labeled carefully. The packing list should match the erection sequence so the site team can unload without reshuffling every container. For remote airports, include spare bolts, touch-up paint, and a clear shortage reporting process. A two-day delay waiting for small hardware can cost more than the hardware itself.
Finally, keep the contract language connected to operation. Define clear height at the usable door opening, not only at the ridge. Define the inside face of cladding, drainage discharge point, insulation thickness, skylight location, and fire wall interface if the hangar joins an office strip. A steel hangar is a working tool, not a decorative shell. The best quote is the one that turns aircraft movement, maintenance safety, and erection risk into drawings that can be checked before the first container leaves the factory.
